Discussing the X....

No, not that crazy person you used to date in college, I'm talking about the X chromosome.

It is simple, and complicated, at the same time.

The simple part: Males have XY for the 23rd chromosomes.  Females have XX.

The a little bit complicated part:  Males get their X from their mother, and a Y from their father, and females get one X from each parent.

This means that the possible X contributors for a persons X are limited, compared to the full set of ancestors for autosomal DNA on chromosome 1-22.

This chart, from Blaine Bettinger, at www.thegeneticgenealogist.com shows the *average* contribution of each ancestor for a male.

You can see all the ancestors who DO NOT contribute to the X at all.  This chart is for a male, but for a female just start in the pink block of the second ring.

For a male, the X comes from up to 2 out of his 4 grandparents, but for a female, the 2 Xs come from  up to 3 out of her 4 grandparents.  Only her paternal grandfather is eliminated.  For males, only 3 of their 8 grandparents can be contributors to their X, for female, 5 out of their 8 great grandparents can be contributors to their two Xs.  As you go further back in the generations, the number of possible ancestors who contributed to the X is much smaller than the actual number of ancestors.

Because of the lesser number of possible contributors, relationships may appear/be predicted closer than they actually are based on the number of cM shared on the X.

At some date in the future, when I have tested my 5 children I will post some more charts showing how much actual contribution we have in our results.

Latest 23andme Relative Finder numbers

It has been awhile since I have posted my RF/sharing/decline numbers at 23andme.

Comments

many of the matches show in multiple RFs.  The numbers change pretty much hourly, as I usually get many accepts/declines/new matches daily.

Geni.com DNA tests are now available!

Exciting news late last night from Geni.com!

Geni.com is now offering DNA testing.  Geni has partnered with FTDNA and they are now offering the full range of tests available at FTDNA, and currently at a significant price reduction.

Family Finder, which goes for $289 at FTDNA can be ordered for only $169.

Y-DNA 37 marker test $169 at FTDNA, thru Geni.com for Geni Pro users is only $134.10

Y-DNA 67 marker test $268 at FTDNA, thru Geni.com for Geni Pro users is only $215.10

There are also MTDNA tests at a discount.

Shipping within the US is $4, and their shipping to outside the USA anywhere in the world is only $6.  This is one-way shipping only I believe. Depending on where you live, this may make testing at FTDNA the least expensive option, due to the high cost of shipping out of the USA for 23andme.

The actual DNA lab work will be done by FTDNA, and you will get a FTDNA page to view your results and matches as usual.

In the future, hopefully there will be integration between your DNA test results and your Geni.com tree, which will be very useful for identifying the connections with your matches.  I hope to have more to report on this soon, and I'm very excited about the possibilities.

So, if you were thinking of ordering a kit, check out the full list of tests and prices at Geni.com HERE

Half or Full Sibling?

It is becoming increasingly common for people to ask how to tell a full sibling from a half sibling with autosomal DNA testing at 23andme.

Firstly, full siblings will usually match around 50% to each other.  Half siblings will match around 25% to each other.  These are averages, and although I have yet to see anyone reporting a full sibling at closer to the 25% than 50%, and have yet to see anyone reporting a half sibling at closer to the 50% than the 25%,  in theory its possible.

Secondly, full siblings will have fully identical segments, half siblings will not.  To check for this you look in Family Inheritance, not Family Inheritance Advaned.

Half Sibling *

All the segments are light blue, which means half-identical.  Where the light blue segments are doesn't matter.

Full Sibling

Some segments are light blue (half-identical) but many are dark blue (fully indentical).

So, that is the quick and easy way to check if someone is a full or half sibling!

Generally speaking, if the two half-siblings have different maternal haplogroups then they are paternal (same father) half siblings.  If they have the same maternal haplogroups, and are males with differing paternal haplogroups, then they are maternal (same mother) half- sibling.

*A full aunt or uncle would appear the same as a half-sibling.

Grace Elizabeth Slocum

*** This is my second Family History Writing Challenge blog post***

Grace Elizabeth Slocum

*** Kristina Hewitt's 3rd great grandmother ***

Grace Elizabeth Slocum was born 5 Jan 1855 in Ontario, Canada.  Grace was the daughter of Willard Woodman Slocum and Sarah Eliza McNutt.

In the 1861 Census of Canada, Grace is living with her parents in Saugeen, Bruce, Canada.

In the 1870 US census, Grace is living with her parents in Marquette, Michigan, USA.

Grace married John Thomas Lloyd 10 Nov 1870 in Marquette, Michigan, USA.

In the 1881 Canadian census Grace was living in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

There is a John T Lloyd, carpenter, in the Grand Forks, North Dakota city directory in 1889 living at 512 International Ave.   At the same address is William W. Lloyd, his son. The names of married women were not listed, but Grace was likely living with her husband at the same address.

By 23 Sep 1890 when their daughter Grace Elizabeth is born the family is in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Sadly, there is no 1890 US census.

In the 1891 city directory for Grand Forks, North Dakota there is John T, carpenter, at 512 International Ave. Married womens names were not listed, but Grace was likely living with her husband at the same address

In the 1893 city directory for Grand Forks, North Dakota, there is John T at 900 International Ave, as well as Miss Lovina, and Wm W at the same address. Married womens names were not listed, but Grace was likely living with her husband at the same address

In 1895 John T, carpenter, is listed at 517 N 4th, also at the address is Wm W Lloyd and Miss Lovina Lloyd. Married womens names were not listed, but Grace was likely living with her husband at the same address

In 1896 John T Lloyd, carpenter, is listed at 1124 Cheyenne Ave in the Grand Forks, North Dakota directory.  Also at that address is Miss Agnes Lloyd and William W Lloyd. Married womens names were not listed, but Grace was likely living with her husband at the same address

In the 1898 city directory for Grand Forks, North Dakota is John T Lloyd, carpenter, at 1124 Cheyenne Ave.  Also at that address is John D Lloyd. Married womens names were not listed, but Grace was likely living with her husband at the same address

In the 1899 city directory for Grand Forks, North Dakota is John T Lloyd, carpenter, at 1124 Cheyenne Ave. Married womens names were not listed, but Grace was likely living with her husband at the same address

In the 1900 city directory for Grand Forks, North Dakota is John T. Lloyd, carpenter at 1124 Cheyenne Ave.  Also at that address is James Lloyd.  Married womens names were not listed, but Grace was likely living with her husband at the same address

In the 1900 census Grace was living in Grand Forks, North Dakota, USA. Grace was listed as having given birth to 16 children, 9 still living.  I have accounted for 10 children, 1 of whom died prior to 1900.  There are likely 6 other children who died young.  They apparently owned their home and had a mortgage.

The 1903 Grand Forks, North Dakota city directory in 1903 lists John T. Lloyd, carpenter, living at 1124 Cheyenne Ave, also at the same address is Miss Lavina Lloyd, Harvey M Lloyd, and James F Lloyd.  Married womens names were not listed, but Grace was likely living with her husband at the same address

In the 1905 Grand Forks, North Dakota city directory for 1905 it lists John T Lloyd, carpenter, living at 1124 Cheyenne Ave.  Also at the same address is Frederick F Lloyd, carpenter.

In a 1907 city directory for Grand Forks, Grace, widow of John T, is listed.

In a 1909 city directory for Grand Forks, Grace, widow of John T, is listed.

When her son Walter Percy Lloyd enlisted in the C. E. F for WWI on Jun 1, 1918 he listed Grace as his next of kin, and gave her address as Carmichael, Saskatchewan, Canada.

On 5 Mar 1922 Grace crossed the border from Canada.  At that time she listed that her last permanent residence was in Carmichael, Saskatchewan, Canada.  Her nearest relative in Canada was her son Walter Percy Lloyd in Carmichael, Saskatchewan.  She indicated she had been in the US before from 1880-1906 to Apr 1921 in various states.  Her destination was her daughter, Mrs. Tony Bloss in Portland, Oregon.  Her complexion was medium, her hair gray, and eyes brown.  Her place of birth was listed as Port Samey, Ontario.

In a 1925 city directory for Oakland, Alameda, Berkeley, California, Grace is listed.

In the 1930 census, Grace is living in Los Angeles, California with her daughter Grace Hands and family.

In the 1940 census, Grace is living in Pasadena, Los Angeles, California with her daughter Mary A Bloss and her family.

Grace died 28 Jul 1944 in Los Angeles, California, USA.  Her death is recorded in the California Death Index 1940-1997 accessed at Ancestry.com.

John Thomas Lloyd

*** This is my first post for the Family History Writing Challenge.  Ideally, I would like to be able to make each post 1,000 words.   This will force me to dig deeper into each persons life, look for additional records and stories that I might otherwise have hurried past. ***

John Thomas Lloyd

*** Kristina Hewitt's 3rd great grandfather ***

John Thomas Lloyd was born about 1844 in Ontario, Canada.   The parentage of John is currently under investigation.   Some other researchers have indicated, without sources, that he was born in Gull Lake, Ontario, Canada.

I would expect him to be listed in the 1851 census, but nothing likely shows up in a search of the census of Ancestry.com.

I would expect him to be listed in the 1861 census, but nothing likely shows up in a search of the census of Ancestry.com.

It is possible that he moved with his family away from Ontario as a young child, because by 1870 he was in Marquette, Michigan, USA.

John Thomas Lloyd married Grace Elizabeth Slocum 10 Nov 1870 in Marquette, Michigan, USA.   The marriage record, an image of which can be viewed at familysearch.org, indicated that they were both residents of Marquette at that time, and they were both born in Canada.  John's occupation is listed as "carpenter"

In Dec 1873, John registered the birth of his son William Woodman Lloyd in Paisley, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada.  John is listed as a carpenter.

Apparently Mary Agnes Lloyd was born in Paisley, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada in 23 Nov 1877.

According to a late birth registration made by Grace for John Duke Lloyd in 1941, she and John were residents of Paisley when their son John Duke Lloyd was born 5 Jan 1880.

John was listed in the 1881 Census of Canada in Winnipeg, Selkirk, Manitoba.

He is listed as Methodist, born in Ontario, Irish origin, and a carpenter.

There is a John T Lloyd, carpenter, in the Grand Forks, North Dakota city directory in 1889 living at 512 International Ave.   At the same address is William W. Lloyd, his son.

In the 1893 city directory for Grand Forks, North Dakota, there is John T at 900 International Ave, as well as Miss Lovina, and Wm W at the same address.

In 1895 John T, carpenter, is listed at 517 N 4th, also at the address is Wm W Lloyd and Miss Lovina Lloyd.

In 1896 John T Lloyd, carpenter, is listed at 1124 Cheyenne Ave in the Grand Forks, North Dakota directory.  Also at that address is Miss Agnes Lloyd and William W Lloyd.

In the 1898 city directory for Grand Forks, North Dakota is John T Lloyd, carpenter, at 1124 Cheyenne Ave.  Also at that address is John D Lloyd.

In the 1899 city directory for Grand Forks, North Dakota is John T Lloyd, carpenter, at 1124 Cheyenne Ave.

In the 1900 city directory for Grand Forks, North Dakota is John T. Lloyd, carpenter at 1124 Cheyenne Ave.  Also at that address is James Lloyd.

In the 1900 US census, John with his wife Grace and their children Fred, Harvey, Grace, George and "Percie" are listed as living in Grand Forks, North Dakota.  The census indicates that John's parents were both born in Ireland.  It lists his immigration year as 1889. John T. is listed as born May 1844.  John's occupation is "Contractor and Builder".  John is listed as an alien, which means he had not applied to be naturalized.

In the 1905 Grand Forks, North Dakota city directory for 1905 it lists John T Lloyd, carpenter, living at 1124 Cheyenne Ave.  Also at the same address is Frederick F Lloyd, carpenter.

The Grand Forks, North Dakota city directory in 1907 lists Grace as the widow of John T, so he likely died between the 1900 census and the gathering of the info for the 1907 city directory, which confirms the gravestone date of 1905.

Findagrave.com has an entry for a John T. Lloyd, with a photo.  This John T. was born 7 May 1844 and died 1 Sep 1905.   On the same stone is a Thomas S. Lloyd.  I believe this to be the grave of John T and likely a son of his who died young.

Many of their children seem to have ties to the Salvation Army.

The children of John Thomas Lloyd and Grace Elizabeth Slocum include:

William Woodman Lloyd

Lovina Maria Lloyd

Mary Agnes Lloyd

John Duke Lloyd

Fred Lloyd

Harvey McMaster Lloyd

Thomas S. Lloyd

Grace Elizabeth Lloyd
