My GrandTree

On 23andme if you have a grandparent or more than one grandparent tested you can use the GrandTree to see a cute little visual that shows how much DNA you inherited from each grandparent.

(You always inherit 50% of your autosomal DNA from each parent, but they give you a random amount from each of their parents, so you will get an *average* of 25% from each grandparent, but not necessarily *exactly* 25%)

I share an unusually high amount of DNA with my paternal grandmother.  34.5% (2588 cM, 29 segments)

I find it interesting that I have sharing with my paternal grandmother on every chromosome except the 22nd.    On the 22nd I seem to have inherited DNA primarily from my 2 grandfathers....

new 23andme results are in!

This time the results are for my paternal grandmother.

I share a great deal of DNA with her...34.5%!  The average grandparent/grandchild share is 25%.

I must say I really enjoy watching the new Relative Finder matches appear!

Biggest interesting result so far is that my maternal half brother and half sister match my paternal grandmother in the same segment, indicating my maternal grandmother Doreen Knox was distantly related to my paternal grandmother!

With these new results, I can now sort all my matches according to which grandparent the connection is through.

Now I need to find at least 8 2nd cousins to test to start the process of sorting all matches to the correct great grandparent!

And of course, there is still my husband and his entire family to test :)

I really believe that genetic genealogy could help all of us break through our brick walls and discover new ancestors, so please consider autosomal DNA testing!

Mary Jane Starr

Mary Jane Starr was born 1843 in Huntley Township, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada.

Mary Jane was born to married to Richard Powell.

Sometime between 1881 and 1891 Mary Jane Starr appears to have married Thomas Mulligan, who was her daughter Ellen Jane's grandfather in law.

Odder still, Thomas Mulligan's first wife was apparently Ellen Jane Powell???

Richard Powell

Richard Powell was born 1836 in Quebec.

Richard married Mary Jane Starr in 1868.

Richard died in 1884.

A thought for those of us with brick walls...

and isn't that pretty much all of us genealogists?  Feel free to post a comment if you are the person who has every line back to the beginning of time all documented nicely ;)

Every so often I revisit all my brick walls.  I have posted many of them on here.  Some are just areas I haven't taken the time or money to order documents that could likely easily move me past them.  Others are issues that have vexed me for years or decades (like who are Edmund Rice's parents???)

Each time I review all the evidence I have on the situation, and explore if any new record sets have become available that may shed some light on the situation.  Familysearch.org and Ancestry.com and Fold3 and all the other sites are continuously updating and adding to their collections.  Sometimes records are restricted until after a certain date. (hands up if you are waiting on the 1940 census release for more info on someone in your files?!)

Often, I send out emails to other researchers and cousins who are working on the same lines, maybe they have solved the mystery and not told me about it!  Maybe they have ordered more documents, DNA tested, cemetery photographed,  etc. since last we corresponded.

I may make a blog posting on my brick wall, and hope it helps lead someone with an answer, or the possibility of helping find the answer, to me.

Then, I do at least one thing to move me past this brick wall.  I order a document, or request a cemetery search or some such thing.

Finally, I attempt to do some volunteer indexing/arbitrating for familysearch.org on the closest collection to my problem.

While this will not likely directly solve my brick wall, I figure it will help advance the genealogy of that area which in theory will help me in the long run.

I don't think familysearch.org intends to ever let us run out of things to index (disclaimer here, I do not work for and do not represent familysearch.org in anyway, these are my opinions only, no insider info here!) so I figure the more I index and arbitrate, the more records will be made available.

Lewis Anthony Joseph Napoleon Peverelle

Lewis was born Luigi Guiseppe Antonio Napoleone Peverelli in Como, Italy  on 17 Mar 1804.

Lewis was the son of Paulo Peverelli and Lucrezia Peverelli.

Lewis married Sophia Round 14 Sep 1828.

They had 5 children:

Lewis Edward:

Charles:

John:

Rosa:

Guiseppe:

Sophia died 3 Feb 1839.

Pigot's directory 1837

Lewis then married Eliza Adams, 30 Apr 1839 in England.

Eliza had been married to John Hawkesford in 1835, he died, leaving her a widow with a son, John Henry Hawkesford.

Lewis Peverelle household, St. Martin, Birmingham 1841 Census of England

Above is the 1841 census entry for Lewis.  He is listed as a "general dealer" and living with his wife Eliza and Carlo (maybe his son Charles. Carlo is Italian form of Charles, but this Carlo is listed as foreign born....I think this is the Charles who married Esther and later Henrietta Foules- that Charles was born in Italy, the age is right and would be Lewis's nephew) and they have a female servant. (F. S. is the abbreviation for Female Servant in the 1841 census)

Notice the other children from the first marriage (Lewis Edward, John, Rose, Guiseppi) are not present.  My current guess is that the younger ones were away at school and Lewis died sometime prior.

Lewis and Eliza have 3 children:

Louis born in 1842

Joseph Alexander b 1845

and Isabella born 1850.

When I was young, my grandfather worked for Eaton's in the furniture department.

Every year my sister and I would go to the Eaton's Christmas party which was a breakfast with Santa type affair.

Peverelle DNA doesnt match!

Well I cant say I didnt see it coming....

A few weeks ago I received the DNA results for one of my grandfathers 3rd cousins.  He didnt match my grandfather or my grandfathers sister.

Today I received the DNA results of another of my grandfathers 3rd cousins.  He matches the first one (they are 2nd cousins) but also doesnt match my grandfather or my grandfathers sister.

Somewhere in this line is a problem possibly.

Lewis Henry Peverelle b 1865.

Louis Peverelle b 1842

Luigi Peverelli b 1804 in Italy.  (MRCA for all 4)

Thelma Peverelle

Thelma Peverelle was my great grandmother.

Her maternal haplogroup would have been H6a1 (the haplogroup of two of her tested children).

Thelma was born 5 Jul 1904 in Ontario, Canada.

Thelma's ancestry is now in question, as DNA testing done at 23andme has shown that two of her children do not match descendants of Joseph Alexander Peverelle.
