Everything is genealogy
Have you ever watched Numb3rs on TV? They say in that show that "everything is math". In my life everything is genealogy.
I have posted before about learning Italian with Rosetta Stone. Last night I started to watch movies in Italian on Netflix. I watched with "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" with Sophia Loren.
For some strange reason I had mixed up Sophia Loren in my mind with Loretta Lynn.

Rosetta Stone is the language learning program I have chosen. I have signed up for a 1 yr online subscription to learn Italian.
What does this have to do with genealogy? One of my lines (Peverelle) leads back to Italy where they were known as Peverelli. I hope to someday visit Italy and do family research there and maybe even meet some distant Peverelli cousins there. In the meantime, at Ancestry.com and familysearch.org I have access to Italian records, in Italian. I am hopeful that after having completed the 5 levels of Italian, that I will be able to read the documents at least well enough for my genealogy purposes.
In time, I may even be able to post a few duplicate blog posts in Italian on my Italian ancestors, and even communicate in Italian with distant Italian cousins.
In the long run, my hope is actually to acquire one ancestral language per year. So for 2012 the language is Italian, next year it may well be German.
*updates Feb 23, 2012*
My husband has the German one. We are both on the $20/mth TotalE plans, where you commit to one year of $20/mth and get access to all the levels and special online features. It seems the languages that are available at this price rotates. Usually it seems currently the price is $299 for one year.
I really enjoy the online features and the program in general.
From the time you begin, you receive no instruction in your native language. Thru gradually introducing new pictures you learn the new language. For example, at first you may see 4 pictures each a different colour, maybe red, blue, yellow and green. And they are labeled in the language you are learning. So you can see the words for each. Now that you know those the next set of pictures maybe is a blue flower, a green house, a yellow ball and a red dress. Since you know the colour, you now know the words for flower, house, ball, dress. And it continues, using what you know to teach you the next thing you dont know.
There are different parts to each lesson. You learn to spell and read and speak in the language. You will speak into a headset microphone to make sure you are speaking correctly.
Then online, there are games you can play whenever you like. So far I have only played the single player ones, but you can play with others as well (everyone has a screen name).
Also included is live sessions with a native speaker and a small group, but I havent tried this yet.
As you progress you earn badges.
Over the years I have tried other programs on my computer for language learning, but since trying Rosetta Stone I wouldnt even consider any other method.
I think I read somewhere that Rosetta Stone expects that each level will taken about 40-50 hours to complete. Italian has 5 levels so thast about 200 hours. Each level has 4 units, and each unit has lessons.
I am currently on Unit 2 of Level 1. Examples of what I have learned so far: colours, numbers, on/in/under, names of family members, eating, drinking, where do you live, countries, what is your name/my name is/his name is, clothing, dishes, animals, standing/sitting/running/walking, big/small, man/woman/boy/girl and more.
I always admire my European cousins for their ability to speak/write in English as well as their native language.

William was located in the 1861 census in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
William was located in the 1871 census in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
So far I have been unable to locate William in the 1881 census.
William married Florence Nightingale Slack in 1891 in Sheffield, England. Florence had been previously married to Frederick Bradshaw in 1880 and widowed with a son Benjamin Bradshaw. I do not have copies of either marriage record, and this is on my todo list.
William was located in the 1891 census in Nether Hallam, Yorkshire, England.
William was located in the 1901 census in Nether Hallam, Yorkshire, England. His widowed mother Harriet is living with his family.
After the 1901 census I havent found any records of William. He may have died in England, or immigrated to Canada with his wife and children.

Ernest Hewitt
Ernest was my great grandfather.
Ernest was born 22 Apr 1899 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. His father was William Edward Hewitt, and his mother was Florence Nightingale Slack.
In the 1901 census we find Ernest living with his parents, sister Theresa, and brother William Edward as well as his fathers widowed mother Harriet. They are living at 30 Blackburn in Nether Hallam, Sheffield, England.
Ernest served in WWI. Here records and family stories conflict a bit. Years ago my grandfather told me a rather romantic story that Ernest had served with the English in WWI, and had met Thelma's brother Oswald. After the war, Ernest came to Canada with Oswald to find work. This was during the Great Depression era. Instead of travelling Canada looking for work, Ernest met and married Thelma. At another time I heard a story, again from my grandfather I think, that Ernest had lied about his age to serve in WWI as he was too young.
These stories sounded great, and it turns out that Oswald did serve in WWI. His papers are stamped 81st Battalion, CEF.
There is an Ernest Hewitt, born 22 Apr 1897 in Hull, Yorkshire, England. who joined the CEF from Toronto. His next of kin is listed as Florence Nightingale. His papers are stamped 139th overseas Battalion. At the time he enlisted he was living with his mother af 5 Cornwall St. in Toronto. His religion is listed as Church of England, He is listed as having blond hair and blue eyes. His height is listed at 5 ft.
I feel there is a good chance this is "my" Ernest, but that would mean he was already living in Canada before he enlisted.
There are some things that could be done to figure out this issue.
For one, where was Ernest in the 1911 census? Both Canada and England had a census in 1911 and both are available to search. So far I cant locate Ernest or his parents between the 1901 census and the marriage of Ernest in 1924.
There is a William Edward Hewitt listed in the birth index for England in 1896.
There is a William Edward Hewitt who enlisted for WWI 21 Nov 1914. from Toronto, who lists his next of kin as his mother Florence at 16 Cyprus in Toronto. He was born 24 Sep 1896 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. He was a butcher.
Ordering the birth record to see if it lists 24 Sep 1896 as his birthdate might help.
Searching Toronto city directories in that time period might yield something.
On the 31 Oct 1924 at St. Johns Garrison Church (Church of England) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada Ernest married Thelma Maud Peverelle. They planned to live at 166 Sydenham St after marriage.
Ernest and Thelma had five children. At the time of writing this 2 were still living.
Their first child was Peverelle Shamburg Hewitt. He was born 17 Jul 1926 and died of dyptheria 15 Feb 1928. He is buried in Union Cemetery in Port Hope. I'm interested to know where this Shamburg name comes from as it shows up in other parts of Thelma's family.

Save SSDI - Sign Petition!
The Social Security Death Index (SSDI) is a resource used quite frequently by genealogists. In fact, I have used it in almost every client project I have done in one way or another.
Due to some issues, which I feel are mainly misinformation, it may no longer be available for us to use.
Personally, I don't feel that the SSDI is contributing in any major way to identify theft. However, I would be fine with no longer having the SSNs listed in the SSDI, just the names, and birth and death dates.
I'm not sure how not showing SS numbers would affect ordering the SS applications, which have already started to have the parents names redacted if the person wasn't born at least 100 years ago.
There is a petition online HERE . Please sign it and help save our access to the SSDI. As of right now there are 2094 signatures, and I would really like to see us hit the 25,000 goal by Mar 8, 2012.

Discordant SNPs
I keep a database of which segments are shared with each DNA cousin here for all my profiles.
I use this database to determine which branch people are connected to. I have noticed that most if not all of my predicted 4th cousins, with 2 segments, arent likely 4th cousins, as they have a segment from my mothers line and one from my fathers line.
Since receiving my fathers results, I have noticed some alarming false matches (ie where I can see they dont match my father, but do match me and I also match a maternal relative in that segment who doesnt match the cousin).
Looking at one particular predicted 4th cousin, (2 segments, 14 cM total) there is one segment on chr 2 which matches me in a 5.5 cM and also my maternal grandfather. Peachy, no problem there, clearly this relative would be thru my mother and then thru my grandfather. This cousin also matches my maternal half brother in the same segment . Again, peachy, exactly what I would expect since I also match my half brother there and we both match my maternal grandfather there.
BUT, in the 2nd segment, the larger one, its on chr 7. apparently 14M-19M (8 cM). Now on chr 7 I match my maternal half-sister 8M-44M. Neither my sister or myself match our maternal grandfather in this segment, so the logic is that that segment is from my mothers mother. My half sister doesnt match the cousin on chr 7 (or anywhere else). Now, until recently this was also peachy, as I then assumed that the chr 7 segment was from my father. Trouble is, now I have my fathers results, and he DOESNT match this cousin at all. So this would be I guess an 8 cM false match?
But it got me thinking, soI ran David Pikes tool for discordant SNPS between myself and my father. How many is average for parent/child? I have 164, but 26 of those dont count because they are on the X or mtDNA, which is expected to be discordant. So we really have about 138 of them.
And sure enough one of them is on chr 7 at 16607786. This would be within that "false match". segment. I have looked there and see:
CT maternal half bro
CC me
CT maternal grandfather
TT maternal grandfathers full sister
TT father
CC maternal half sis
So one of my Cs would be from my mother....and my father is either a genotyping error and should be CT or....I could have the genotyping error and really be CT or....? Ive been reading some on copy number variations but dont fully understand them yet.
This is the only discordant SNP within this particular false matching segment. Would ONE SNP different cause my father to not match if all the others did? I will be contacting this cousin to beg him to upload to gedmatch so I might compare there, but does anyone have thoughts on this?
I have fantasies about phasing all my data and reconstructing a DNA profile for my mother, but these little glitches really throw me for a loop!
