Website of the day - Jan 2, 2012 - Ancestry.com

If I had to pick ONE website, it would be Ancestry.com.  They aren't the least expensive, and familysearch.org is certainly getting closer to bumping them out of that "#1" spot, but Ancestry.com has so many great records that I can't imagine working on genealogy online without access to Ancestry.com

I have been a subscriber for 13 years or so, since it was a new website.  While I don't always agree with things Ancestry.com does (such as the ending of their Expert Connect program),  they continue to add content that I am delighted with all the time.

I also really like the Member Trees, because I can add records directly to my online private Member Tree there.

One really does have to watch out for false "shaking leaves" (ask my family who often hear me moaning about others who have clicked those "shaking leaves" until their tree is nothing but nonsense) but the hints are often useful.  Perhaps not as useful as the Ancestry.com commercial imply, but if you are careful about reviewing the hints and not just clicking each one and assuming its correct, they can be quite handy.

I am partial to the record sets that have images, and always review the actual images of the documents to read for myself what the record says.

One weakness is their indexing is clearly not always well done.  I correct many census indexes nearly every day I work from Ancestry.com records.  Still, for someone like me, who has worked on genealogy back in the "old days" when there were no census indexes for most places, and you would have to spend days or weeks pouring thru microfilms *hoping* to find the family you were looking for, it is a godsend to be able to work on those same records from home, late at night, sipping hot chocolate in your PJs.

Ancestry.com will be entering the autosomal DNA testing market this year, which could bring even more greatness to their site.

While I dont agree with their limiting of free accounts, check out Geni.com.

Website of the Day - Jan 6, 2012 - Genes Reunited

Genes Reunited is a site that is used by many UK people.

While they have records, I would say they are best used for their "hot matches" where they try to connect you with others who have your ancestors listed in their tree.

While many sites also will connect you with others researching the same families, I find Genes Reunited, which is a UK company, seems to have a great number of UK people, likely due to their advertising within those countries.  Just this week I was able to add 2 generations to one of my brick wall lines, as I made contact with someone there who had been to the country of origin and viewed the actual church records there.

Family Ghost

When I was young, we had a family ghost.  You know, the ghost who everyone would say was responsible for lost car keys, misplaced papers etc.  This family ghost was named "Uncle Luigi".  Luigi is the Italian form for Lewis.  Interestingly, no one in my family had any idea whatsoever that we had any Italian background, but it turns out that we do indeed come from a long line of Lewis/Luigi named grandparents and uncles!

23andme sale and update

Currently 23andme is offering a $23 off sale.

http://www.23andMe.com/a/ff1/z6i8e

I am awaiting the results from two tests right now, having received word the lab has received both of them.  One is for a 3rd cousin of my grandfathers on his mothers side, and the other is for someone is may quite likely be my father.  I still have a ton of people to test so Ill be buying more kits soon myself.

A little update on the status of each of the 5 profiles that I have data back on:

myself:                            1014 in RF
                                        307 are sharing
                                          11 declined sharing

mat half sis Sandra:  775 in RF
                                234 sharing
                                    7 declined sharing

mat. half bro Brandon:  784 in RF
                                    144 sharing
1 declined sharing  (but it was a .33% match!!!!)

maternal grandfather:  907 in RF
                                       246 sharing
                                       7 declined sharing

mat great aunt Pauline (sister to my maternal grandfather): 799 in RF
                                                                                        163 sharing
                                                                                        1 declined sharing.

When FTDNA allows uploads of 23andme data (for a price, about $50 apparently) I will be able to post how the stats there compare.

Of all those 5 profiles I can propose a paper trail to ONE on Sandra's.  (technically two, because its a lady who has since had her father tested who also matches Sandra in the same segment).  None of the profiles gets very many good, close matches tho, maybe because of our Canadian background?  We do have Colonial American roots, but our branch came to Canada around the 1790's.....

Happy Birthday Sarah Lee Holmes aka Sarah Lee Kehoe

Dear Sarah,

We have never met, but you are my 2nd cousin.   You were most likely adopted when you were a toddler.  Members of your birth family would love to hear from you, they have a Facebook page devoted to finding you.  You were born in St. Catharines, Ontario 4 Dec 1981.  So today is your 30th birthday and I wanted to make this posting in case lightning may strike twice and you may encounter my blog some day looking for your birth relatives.   I hope you are happy and well wherever you are.

Amazing update!

Yesterday I was contacted by an individual who I will not yet name, but this person believes that he is my biological father.  Apparently he was my mothers boyfriend at the time, and she had told him that she was pregnant, and he saw me a couple times after my birth.  We chatted for some time on the telephone last night, and he has seen the picture of my mother on my blog and recognized her.  He came to my blog by searching for her rather unusual name.   One thing I would like to mention here is that others who knew her back then may have known her as Jan Cordelli.  She also apparently led people to believe she was 23 when she was 18. This is the name that this individual knew her as first back in 1973, but he later learned her real name.  He will be testing with the same company (23andme) that I have already tested many family members at, so in a few weeks we will know for sure.

This individual also had been told by a roommate of my mothers at that time that she had had 3!!! children prior to me.  This is the second time that someone has suggested that (another person suggested she had twins prior to me) my mother had other children who were placed for adoption, I believe here in Ontario.  On Monday I intend to apply for the non-identifying info and place myself on the contact list for any children born before me.  My mother had rare mtDNA, u8a1, so if you are adopted and born sometime prior to 1974 likely in Ontario, please contact me and arrange to test thru 23andme, I would love to know if you exist!

This person has the ancestral background that my 23andme matches suggested, French Canadian and Irish.  I am currently working on seeing if I can connect a paper trail between him and my 23andme matches with the info he provided me on his grandparents but we will likely have to wait out the weeks before 23andme processes his DNA kit.

Needless to say I am excited to have heard from this person, and eager to see the results of the test, and also still very much in shock.

It really seems every question that gets answered leads to more questions!
