Thankful Thursday
Short post today. I just wanted to say that I am eternally grateful to everyone who has agreed to DNA test for me. You all know who you are, and I appreciate it, I really do. I know many of you really dont care about genealogy one way or the other, or dont understand why I wish to find my biological father, but you all tested anyway, to help me. And I am Thankful for that this Thursday!

Andrew R Doyle
Andrew R. Doyle is one of the brickwalls in my research.
Andrew married Angelina Friar on 17 Sept 1860 in Ontario, Canada.
He is listed as age 22 which makes his birth c. 1838. He was listed as born in Ireland.
His parents are listed as Patrick and Susannah Doyle.
Things are already interesting as it appears there are 2 children already born before they married.
Andrew and Angelina had the following children:
Lorenzo Dow: born 1856
Lorenzo's death record in 1926 indicates his father was Andrew R Doyle.
Sarah Frances: born 1859
Sarah Frances's death record indicates her father was Andrew R Doyle.
William Schomberg: born c 1861
David Philander: born c 1867
Julia Ann: born 1869 ( my direct ancestor).
Sometime later Angelia adopts a boy born in 1885 Charles Shamberg Doyle.
I would love to do DNA testing on any of the descendants of Andrew Doyle and Angelina Friar, so if you have stumbled onto this blog and you are a descendant please contact me!
Notice two of the children have Shamberg with various spellings as middle names. This may be a family name from somewhere???? Im guessing it may be Susannah, mother of Andrew Doyle's maiden name was "Schomberg".
From http://www.trentu.ca/admin/library/archives/84-020%20inquests%201860-1869.htm which lists inquests into deaths in the area, I came across this death which is most likely Andrew.

DNA cousins on 23andme
Since we match DNA on 23andme (or you match DNA with some relative of mine whose account I manage) I will now be attempting to see which ancestor(s) we have in common. To start this process I need to know the names of your 4 grandparents and when/where they were born. Even if all you know is approximate dates or countries or states and not cities as much as you know will be a great starting point.
If you have any other relatives that have tested on 23andme, please tell me this as well, as it will help me to narrow down the possible ancestors or focus on the most likely areas of the family tree.
If you have a public family tree on ancestry.com, please send me a link to you on that tree. I am unable to locate trees on ancestry.com by name of family tree (if anyone out there knows how to do this please tell me!)
If you havent had any other relatives tested on 23andme, please consider doing so. It helps a great deal to be able to sort your matches according to which parent or grandparent they are related to.
I often get asked how to see which DNA segments we share at 23andme.
To see what segment we share, go to Ancestry Labs, under My Ancestry on the left on the screen.
Then go to Advanced Family Inheritance.
(I will try to come back and add screen shots)
Then, put me on one side (or whoever you match) and you on the other side. You will see a chart showing where we match DNA. I prefer to view it in the table format, so click "View in a table"
It will say which chromosomes match and which segment.
I record all these matches in a spreadsheet. This way I can see who else I match in the same segment, or overlapping segments to see if they also match each other.
If you also record your matches in a spreadsheet (which I highly recommend) then I would appreciate hearing who else you match in the same segment so I can see if they also match me.
If you can add a picture to your 23andme profile it really helps.
It is also great if you can set your profile to public. Public matches can be invited to share without using the 5 invites a day, which is really helpful! They can also be viewed with the name instead of Anon in Ancestry Finder.
If you can upload your raw data to GEDMATCH that also helps more people that match you find you and helps to be able to view data not displayed at 23andme (smaller than 5 cM shared segments etc.). You can read more on GEDMATCH in a seperate post.
I am always very happy to see a profile that has either a link to their family tree or a list of 4 grandparents etc. Blank profiles make me sad :(

so we're related...now what???
Over the years of genealogy research I have contacted and been contacted by thousands of cousins, some fairly close, and some very distant. After the initial contact is made, and info is exchanged, it is easy to fall out of contact.
Personally, I always like to receive notices of births, and marriages and appreciate being informed of deaths etc. I also like to see photos added to my ancestry.com tree by cousins.
One thing that would help me tremendously is if you...yes...YOU!!....would test with 23andme.
23andme does autosomal testing which means it doesnt matter if you are male or female, and it doesnt matter which ancestor we share. If we are related in any way, we may match autosomal DNA segments.

23andme update
As of today I have 957 matches in RF on my own profile, 860 on my grandfather Lewis's profile, and 730 on my maternal half sister Sandra's profile
# of those in RF sharing genomes:
me 258
Sandra 198
Lewis 206
number of known DNA and paper trail connections: ZERO
I have connections that I can show on paper but the DNA clearly cant come from that connection, I have plenty where I have no clue on the relationship etc.

Day 11
The quest to find DNA cousins continues!
23andme sharing stats of us of today:
561 basic shares, 24 extended shares
my main spreadsheet has 591 entries now and is growing quickly (I use one entry per chromosome matches so many people who share segments in multiple places are listed more than once in the spreadsheet, so I actually have many more accepted shares to enter)
Whenever I get a RF decline it is so saddening!
Today I finished sending out all the public match invites for AF and RF on all 3 accounts as well as the daily 5 per account (so 15/day now)
I figure I will be ordering the next two or three kits in a few days.
I've set a goal of identifying my biological father within 3 mths of when I started. I originally planned on a goal of 6 mths but with the new RF/AF changes I think it will be possible much faster. I already have a few good leads (matches who I know much be on my fathers side) but still have a great deal to do!
